Case on appeal before the N.Y. State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Fourth Dept. concerning the ownership of four wampum belts. The Onondaga Nation, as well as individual members of the Six Nations Indian tribes, sued for possession of the belts which had been sold without their permission by Thomas Webster, wampum-keeper. They passed through several hands until purchased by the collector John Boyd Thacher. The University of the State of New York was the most recent wampum-keeper for the Six Nations.
